A destination curtain from a Lehigh Valley Transit Company trolley

Destinations

Beyond stating that this item would have been used on the Liberty Bell  Line and that the width of the sign was 24 inches, the person offering this item did not offer any details as to the type car which might have carried this sign or with in what time frame the curtain may have been used.

After poking around in some of the LVT books I have acquired over the years, I am prepared to offer the following possibilities:

From the destinations on the curtain I am  guessing that the sign was created after 1926 or even as late as 1932. After 1926 because there are no destinations for stops on the original line from Wales Junction to Chestnut Hill. That portion of the line was converted to bus in 1926.

I am guessing that it would have been after 1932 as there are no destinations included for the lines abandoned at that time such as Slatington, Nazareth, Emaus, or Macungie. All of these lines were abandoned in 1932.

As to the car type, the original LVT St. Louis car built in 1901 were equipped with cloth destination sign boxes located in the upper right sash of each car end (as one looks out of each end of the car. A 24 inch width for the curtain would be just about right for each of those windows.

Anyone having other ideas about any of this conjecture on my part or even better more facts about the signs or the cars, please feel free to comment accordingly. Click here!
